David Glasgow Farragut (also spelled Glascoe; July 5, 1801 – August 14, 1870) was a flag officer of the United States Navy during the American Civil War. He was the first rear admiral, vice admiral, and admiral in the United States Navy. He is remembered for his order at the Battle of Mobile Bay usually paraphrased as "Damn the torpedoes, full speed ahead" in U.S. Navy tradition. David G. Farragut, U.S. Naval officer, was born near Knoxville, Tennessee in 1801 and died in Portsmouth, NH in 1870. He went to sea in 1810, served in the Mediterranean, the Mexican War, and during the Civil War captured New Orleans and Mobile for the Union.
